In 1865, the Spence family moved to Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. Thomas Spence began his law career at his firm in Fond Du Lac, named Coleman and Spence, which later changed to Spence and Hiner. Spence later became part of the law firm Quarles, Spence and Quarles. Spence also served as Postmaster for the town, as well
